Lab Book (for Stat 211)

This Lab Book is under construction. If you have questions concerning the installation of JRE, please email jtan@stat.wvu.edu. If you have questions concerning LifeStats or the lab exercises, please email jharner@stat.wvu.edu.

LifeStats launches the software which is needed to work the computer exercises listed below. The software is organized chapter-by-chapter as your text book. However, some features (e.g., the Glossary) are not yet implemented.

LifeStats Tutorial is in development. However, detailed directions for using LifeStats are often given in the exercises below.

Important: LifeStats is a Java application which supports your text book. Java Runtime Environmewnt v1.4 or later is required. Java Web Start is also required.

Mac OS X: JRE and Java Web Start are part of Mac OS X. Thus you don't need to do anything. You can open LifeStats just by clicking on the link above. However, you should install v10.2 of Mac OS X (the latest version) for best performance, but v10.1 of Mac OS X will probably work. LifeStats is not supported on Mac OS 9.
Linux, Solaris, or Windows: You can download Java Runtime Enviroment (JRE) and Java Web Start here. You will need to install JRE as a plugin to Internet Exployer or Netscape. You should do this even if you have JRE installed because you probably do not have all the necessary components (unless you obtained JRE from the Sun site).
