Guessing Correlations

This exercise tests your ability to guess correlation values by examining scatter plots. Click on Correlation under Chapter 3 in the left panel. The resulting screen displays four small scatter plots on the left side of the Correlation Coefficient panel. Click on any plot to enlarge it on the right side of the Correlation Coefficient panel. The objective is to match the four correlation values with the scatter plots.

Select a correlation value from the select menu below each plot. If you make a mistake, you can start over by clicking on the reset button. Once you have made your selections, click the submit button. Your correct selections will be displayed in blue and your incorrect selections will be displayed in pink in the lower left. Your cumulative score and the total cumulative score are also given. To run another trial, click on the new trial button.

  1. Practice guessing many times. When you feel confident, do the guessing for five new trials and report your average number correct.
  2. Briefly describe the strategy you used in formulating your guesses.
